Westtown Honors Black History Month with Bayard Rustin Discussion

Bayard Rustin, left, with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The remarkable man behind the 1963 “March on Washington” to secure equal rights for all was born and raised in Chester County. A local public school is even named for this activist.

You know him as Bayard Rustin, the West Chester-born civil rights leader and “troublemaker.”

His story, Angelic Troublemaker: Bayard Rustin, will be the topic for Westtown Historical Commission next discussion in celebration of Black History Month.

Led by historian Dave Walter, the talk will present an overview of Rustin’s life and achievements, his non-violent protest tactics, and collaborations with Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and other political activists.

The event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 10 AM, located in the township building at 1039 Wilmington Pike. Free to attend, the talk will last about an hour.
