A vintage postcard by Coatesville photographer D.W. Faulk boasts an intriguing history, writes staff for History in the Mail.
The postcard, dubbed “Baby Frank At Nine Months,” shows a nine-month-old infant holding a vintage toy. The unique postcard dates back to approximately 1920.
Researchers are able to identify the card’s subject and information thanks to the inscription on the back. The back reveals the baby to be Frank Samuel Groff, and his age at the time of the photograph to be nine and a half months.
The inscription also reveals Faulk’s studio name, listed as “D.W. Faulk, Artistic Photographer.”
Records reveals that Frank Samuel Groff was born in April 1919, also in Coatesville. He had two older sisters, as well as a younger brother who sadly passed at age fifteen.
Groff had black hair and blue eyes. He also worked at a machine company believed to sell printers.
Groff later registered for the draft in 1940 and married Doris Esther Douglas in 1947. The couple had no children.
Frank passed in 2012 in Clearwater, Florida, and Doris later passed in 2014.
D.W. Faulk photographs captured other Chester County subjects throughout the early twentieth century. Several Faulk postcards can be found for sale on eBay and Facebook for shoppers interested in purchasing a unique piece of local history.
