A cruise ship terminal will be built in Tinicum Township at the former Hog Island Dock Terminal Facility, writes Pete Bannan for the Daily Times.
The terminal was formed out of a partnership between PhilaPort, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, and Energy Transfer Marketing and Terminals.
Norwegian will be Philadelphia’s exclusive homeport under a berthing agreement from 2026 to 2033, committing 41 sailings per year, with an annual economic output of $300 million.
The terminal will be located just east of the Philadelphia International Airport off Hog Island Road.
“This is a unique opportunity, and we are fortunate to have two outstanding partners in Energy Transfer and Norwegian Cruise Line, both of whom see tremendous potential in Philadelphia,” said Jeff Theobald, PhilaPort executive director and CEO in a press release.
“We have a lot of hard work ahead of us, but we are ready and excited to welcome cruise passengers this spring,” Theobald said.
PhilaPort will handle marine-side improvements. Norwegian will handle land-side construction and terminal development.
It’s estimated that cruise operations at the new terminal will generate 2,185 direct and indirect jobs.
