As Food Dye Reckoning Nears, Horsham’s Bimbo Bakeries is Ahead of the Curve

Horsham-based Bimbo Bakeries USA is accelerating plans to eliminate artificial food dyes as new regulations reshape the industry.

As new food regulations begin reshaping the U.S. grocery aisle, Horsham-based Bimbo Bakeries USA is emerging as an industry leader in eliminating artificial dyes, writes Sarah Schaschek for Yahoo! News.

Federal and state regulators are moving to restrict synthetic food dyes over the next 18 months, including a nationwide ban on Red No. 3 in 2027 and new school food rules in states like Utah. At the same time, consumer demand for cleaner ingredient labels is pushing manufacturers to reformulate products faster than ever.

According to Kathleen Robbins, vice president of research and development at Bimbo Bakeries USA, nearly every major food company is now working toward removing artificial dyes. Bimbo already eliminated dyes from all sliced breads, buns, and tortillas, and says it is on track to remove artificial dyes across its entire portfolio by 2026, ahead of industry pledges.

The company is also a member of the American Bakers Association, which has committed to phasing out FDA-approved synthetic colors by 2028. However, Bimbo’s progress stands out as regulators warn of a growing patchwork of state laws and mounting supply-chain challenges for natural alternatives.
