Piccolo Mondo Italian Restaurant in nearby Pottstown is stepping up to support local families during the ongoing SNAP freeze, writes José Martínez for WFMZ-TV 69 News.
The Italian-American restaurant, located in North Coventry Township, is offering free meals on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for SNAP eligible families with children aged three through eighteen. Eligible families just need to show a SNAP card and matching ID to receive the meal with no additional questions asked.
The available children’s meals include spaghetti and meatballs and grilled chicken in addition to salad and bread. Families can receive up to four meals each, and children do not need to be present to receive the meal.
The meals come amid the freeze of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits due to the ongoing government shutdown. Many local families face continued food insecurity as the return of food benefits remains unclear.
Angela Mamo, owner of Piccolo Mondo, spoke about her goal of supporting the community during this difficult time. Mamo said, “The community has supported us immensely, especially during COVID. This is just our way to give back, especially to the kids.”
The restaurant plans to continue the free meal offer until SNAP benefits return.
