Lancaster Art Vault: A Vibrant Creative Hub Breathing More Life Into Downtown

The Lancaster Art Vault welcomes visitors for the holiday season. Founded by Victoria Abadir, the gallery continues to grow as a vibrant space for local artists and community creativity.

Just steps from Lancaster’s Gallery Row and the convention center, a once-quiet corner at Orange and Queen Streets now pulses with creativity.

The Lancaster Art Vault, a 15,000-square-foot gallery and artist studio collective located at 100 North Queen Street in the heart of downtown Lancaster, has rapidly become one of the city’s standout arts destinations since opening in May 2024. But its origin story begins with a spark of inspiration that Founder Victoria Abadir could not ignore.

The former Wells Fargo space sat empty for years, its large windows and vaulted ceilings waiting for new energy. “It was a dark corner,” Abadir recalls. “I kept thinking, something needs to happen here that engages the community, something that lights this space back up.”

The breakthrough came during a visit to Alexandria, Va.’s Torpedo Factory, a historic structure turned into artist studios and galleries.

“I walked through and thought, Lancaster needs something like this; I think I can do it,” Abadir said.

Within weeks, she was back home walking the long-vacant bank floor, seeing not teller counters, but possibilities. She shared the idea with Artist and Curator Christiane David, who encouraged her to move quickly. Despite early hesitation, Abadir launched a pop-up that December with twelve artists. “It was an evolving opening,” she recalled. “We just kept building as we went.”

The Lancaster Art Vault’s main gallery space features rotating exhibitions and works by local and regional artists.

Today, the Lancaster Art Vault houses 24 resident artists who create daily in studios along the perimeter of the expansive gallery floor, with an additional collaborative workspace called the “WithDRAWal Room,” dedicated to emerging artists. “Even if an artist isn’t physically in their studio, their doors are open,” Abadir explained. “Visitors can see works in progress, learn about different practices, and form real connections. It becomes an extension of the gallery experience.”

The Vault also offers rotating exhibitions every 30 to 60 days, often pairing guest artists with broader community submissions to highlight regional creativity. The response has been overwhelming — the space is now fully occupied, with a waiting list.

As the holidays approach, Abadir is focused on inviting the community to connect directly with local artists. First Friday Artisan Markets will take place in November and December, along with a special Small Business Saturday market on Nov. 29. In December, the gallery will debut Home for the Holidays, a showcase celebrating the resident artists who “call the Vault their creative home.”

Lancaster’s arts community, Abadir notes, has been deeply supportive and collaborative.

“We all refer artists to one another, and the city understands how vital the arts are to a thriving downtown,” she stated. “There’s so much creativity here, ranging from visual arts to theater, music, and poetry. Visitors come for history and find a vibrant, living art scene.”

Today, the Lancaster Art Vault stands as a beacon of creativity in the city’s vibrant arts community and is a space that invites visitors to connect with artists, explore new work, and experience the energy of a thriving downtown arts scene. Whether you stop by to browse the latest exhibit, chat with resident artists, or pick up a special piece during the holidays, every visit helps sustain and celebrate local art.

The Vault’s doors are open to everyone eager to experience Lancaster’s artistic spirit up close.
