The Story of an Unsung Revolutionary War Hero at Valley Forge

Friedrich Von Steuben, a Prussian military captain, completely reformed the Continental Army in nearby Valley Forge.

The history of nearby Valley Forge is incomplete without recognizing under-recognized hero Friedrich von Steuben, writes Richard Bell for Smithsonian Magazine.

The Prussian military captain is one of Chester County’s many historical ties to the Revolutionary War. With his established military background, Steuben was recruited to train the Continental Army after recommendations from Benjamin Franklin and Silas Deane.

He arrived at Valley Forge in 1778, when the army experienced malnourishment and cold weather at the encampment.

The influence of Steuben’s Prussian military training completely reformed the army. The training included faster marching, more organized formations, and uniform drilling practices. Additionally, Steuben’s training included more effective bayonet charging and faster weapon reloading.

After a month of intense training, the Continental Army became more cohesive with increased morale thanks to Steuben’s regimen.

Additionally, Friedrich von Steuben’s connections in France helped convince King Louis to support the Continental Army, an alliance that would prove highly influential in the Americans’ eventual victory.

Steuben’s time with the Continental Army didn’t end with the troops’ rollout. With four aides, he later completed a lengthy text documenting the training practices implemented at Valley Forge.

The text also included a general assessment of the state of Valley Forge during his time there, including suggested improvements to the camp’s layout.

Steuben relocated to New York for his final years before passing away in 1794. The baron’s legacy continues in the many towns and monuments named in his memory, including one in Valley Forge National Historical Park.
