Octorara Area School District Plans for Student Success With New School Structure

With a recent grade reorganization, Octorara Area School District will help students face fewer transitions and learn in a brand new space.

Octorara Area School District is taking steps to improve student success with a brand new school structure, writes staff for The Daily Local News.

In the recent change, the district reorganized where each grade is housed. Under the new structure, grades 3 through 5 will attend the new Octorara Intermediate School. Additionally, Octorara Middle School now houses grades 6 through 8 in a new middle school program.

High school organization will remain the same, with Octorara High School housing grades 9 through 10.

Previously, Octorara Elementary School housed grades 3 and 4. The former elementary school will be renovated to house after-school programming and other services.

With the new structure, students will face fewer transitions and build more consistent relationships with teachers and peers. Additionally, by removing the elementary school as a full-time instructional space, the district saves money on building maintenance.

Octorara Area School District School Board president Matt Hurley shared that the new plan meets the ongoing needs of the community. Teachers, principals, and school board members all agree that the new change will have a positive impact on students.

About the impact, Dr. Elena Tachau, president of the new Octorara Intermediate School, said, “It’s so exciting to create this special sense of shared identity and culture for our third through fifth graders.”
