The Mushroom Festival is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, and the organizers are preparing to make it the most exciting and memorable festival yet, according to staff at the Chester County Press.
The festival kicks off at 6 PM on Sept. 4 with a parade celebrating Chester County’s premier crop through the streets of Kennett Square.
Beginning on Saturday, Sept. 6, the two-day festival will offer a wide array of attractions. It includes more than 200 vendors, live music and entertainment, cooking demonstrations, mushroom-growing demonstrations, and expanded activities for children. The celebration will even feature a car show.
The theme of the milestone celebration is “Harvesting 40 Years Together!”
The mushroom industry plays an important role in the economy not only in Chester County but the nation as a whole.
Kennett is where the first cultivated mushrooms grown in the United States were produced. Mushroom production in the area has since expanded so much that it now accounts for more than half of the entire United States-grown crop.
This remarkable fact has earned Kennett Square its popular nickname, the Mushroom Capital of the World.
