Elmwood Park will soon undergo a dramatic transformation, writes Rachel Ravina for The Times Herald.
During a recent Norristown Municipal Council work session, residents and officials received their first look at a comprehensive draft plan that reimagines the green space, featuring safety upgrades, new recreational amenities, and a proposed community center.
The $40.6 million Elmwood Park Master Plan, designed by Norristown-based Simone Collins Landscape Architecture, has been in development since fall 2024. Top priorities include creating safer intersections, improving access, and adding new sidewalks, bike lanes, and raised crosswalks to curb speeding.
Councilman Will McCoy and Council President Rebecca Smith praised the plan’s responsiveness to public feedback.
The centerpiece of the project would be a two-phased community center at Roosevelt Field featuring a pool, gym, and multipurpose spaces, estimated at over $25 million in street and park improvements. A final plan is expected later this year, with phased implementation potentially stretching over two decades.
