McGillin’s Olde Ale House has expanded its footprint with a permanent retail store in Center City, just one block away from the 165-year-old bar and restaurant, writes Emma Dooling for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The 500-square-foot space is near the site where McGillin’s operated its temporary Holiday Pop Up Shoppe for the past two years. The Mullins family quietly opened the McGillin’s Shoppe about two weeks ago, but plans to hold a grand opening on June 6.
The shop carries around 100 items, including branded McGillin’s apparel and Philadelphia-themed souvenirs. It also offers Irish imports such as wool scarves, hats, and socks, as well as breakfast teas, Irish-themed stained glass, candles, baby accessories, and books.
The popular establishment will also launch special McGillin’s-branded apparel for the nation’s 250th birthday next year.
Building on the strong performance of its seasonal pop-ups, McGillin’s also aimed to create another lasting presence in Midtown Village, boosting Center City’s retail appeal for both tourists and local residents.
“Keeping the lights on just makes it look a little more alive and less scary for tourists,” said Chris Mullins Jr., who owns McGillin’s with his parents Mary Ellen and Chris Sr.
The shop serves as an extension of the bar.
