Pennsylvania’s Most Misspelled Word in 2025 Will Surprise You

Pennsylvania’s most misspelled word in 2025 is “scissors,” according to Google search data.

Just in time for the National Spelling Bee, a new analysis of Google search data reveals the most commonly misspelled word in Pennsylvania this year: scissors.

Yep — that tricky little tool we’ve all used since kindergarten is still giving adults spelling headaches in 2025.

The data, compiled by WordUnscrambler.pro, looked at over 120 variations of “how to spell” searches between January and May.

Across the country, the most-misspelled words include definitely, separate, and necessary — all classics when it comes to spelling trip-ups.

But here in the Keystone State, “scissors” took the crown.

It makes sense: it has silent letters, a double “s,” and a pronunciation that doesn’t really line up with how it’s spelled.

Across the U.S., other commonly misspelled words in 2025 vary widely by state. In New Jersey, it’s congratulations; in Arizona, people trips folks up.

Texans struggled with protect, while broccoli stumped Tennessee.

Coloradans Googled sergeant the most, and beautiful was the top offender in Delaware, Mississippi, and several other states.

Even schedule gave Connecticut a hard time. The mix of silent letters, tricky suffixes, and phonetic confusion clearly keeps spellcheck working overtime.

According to experts, our reliance on autocorrect and spell check may be making us more prone to forgetting even basic spellings — a phenomenon some researchers call “digital amnesia.”

Want to test your own skills? Try spelling “pneumonia” or “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” without peeking.

Or just blame your phone’s autocorrect. We won’t judge.
