The Michelin Guide has announced that Philadelphia restaurants will be included in its pamphlet for the first time in its 100-plus year history, writes Michaela Althouse for PhillyVoice.
After being limited to New York City, Chicago, and Washington, D.C., the Michelin Guide’s Northeast Cities edition now also features Philadelphia and Boston.
To this end, inspectors have already begun dining at eateries throughout Philly in search for which ones to include.
Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guide, praised Philly as a “premier destination[s] for gourmets to experience a rich diversity of cuisine and culinary history,” as well as “the local passion, talent, and camaraderie” that is evident in Philly’s restaurant community.
To this end, Gregg Caren, CEO of the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau, also praised Philly’s food scene developing into “an internationally acclaimed foodie destination.”
He added that Michelin’s Philly inclusion is “an acknowledgement of years of hard work, collaboration and extraordinary culinary innovation.”
Michelin selects restaurants based on product quality, cooking techniques, consistency, flavor harmony, and the chef’s personality in their cuisine.
Restaurant selections are scheduled to be announced later this year during the Michelin Guide Northeast Cities Ceremony.
