Skip the chains and check out Chester County’s best ice cream shops, from authentic flavors at La Michoacana to vegan gelato at Gemelli.

As summer approaches, it’s time to indulge in an irresistible, creamy delight: ice cream! Instead of reaching for chains like Rita’s, try one of these local ice cream shops, writes Victoria Alfred-Levow and Ben Silver for Main Line Today

Gemelli in West Chester opened in 2014 and has been a destination ever since. The shop offers signature flavors like homemade caramel, Oreo deluxe, and Belgium cookie. Seasonal selections are available, helping to celebrate the various seasons with delicious gelato. They even offer vegan gelato, made with oat milk.  There is an additional location in Phoenixville.

Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream has locations in Berwyn and Downingtown. Handel’s has a rich history, as it was created in 1945 by Alice Handel, who made homemade ice cream from her freshly grown fruit. The ice cream shop has over 100 flavors, including banana cream pie, blueberry cheesecake chunk, caramel latte, and snickerdoodle.

La Michoacana Ice Cream in Kennett Square is getting ready to open up for their 22nd season in business. This is an authentic Mexican shop serving up ice cream with a twist. Try their flan or guava flavor and sprinkle chili powder and cinnamon on top to get the full experience.

The Sugaree in Wayne has an impressive selection of ice cream, water ice, milkshakes, and sundaes. Some of their gluten-free flavors are chocolate, vanilla, coffee, and cotton candy. A unique feature of this local shop is their novelty, bulk, and nostalgic candies. The Sugaree is available for corporate and other private events.
