The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission’s new text messaging service provides motorists with real-time updates during unexpected traffic jams, writes MediaNews Group for The Morning Call.

The free service is available 24/7 when traffic conditions warrant. Travelers can text “info” to 47676 for automated, location-specific updates on the cause of the traffic jam, the estimated clearance times, and roadway conditions.

“We take immense pride in maintaining safe, clear roadways on the PA Turnpike,” said Turnpike Chief Operating Officer Craig Shuey. “Yet, we know incidents happen. While 47676 can’t lift drivers out of a backlog, it provides them timely reassurance that incidents are being handled, and an estimate on when travel will resume.”

After texting “info” to the service’s number using hands-free devices and voice commands – while at a complete stop in a safe location – drivers will receive prompts to confirm their location. Once their location has been verified, they will receive regular updates at 15 to 20-minute intervals.  Texts stop once the incident has been cleared.

The service can be used get information specifically related to unexpected traffic problems, and does provide updates on everyday traffic or delays related to construction.
