Saint Agnes Church in West Chester and the Chester County Health Department recently reached an agreement that will bring back the church’s ability to serve approximately 1,000 meals per week to those in need, writes Bill Rettew for The Daily Local News.
157 chefs will be allowed to prepare homemade, nutritious food and serve it in the church’s Dorothy Day room. This is made possible through the newly formed Dorothy Day Society. To participate in the free breakfast and lunch program, you must be a member of the Dorothy Day Society and involved in another of the church’s free programs, such as health counseling or immigration services.
Last August, the Chester County Health Department shut down the home chefs and the food service at Saint Agnes. The health department stated the food served could be “potentially hazardous.”
However, many people relied on these meals.
“We are cognizant that this might be the only meal that our guests might receive this day depending on their circumstances, so we try to make it as healthy a meal as we can,” said Barbara Kirby, Director of Outreach Services.
Members of the church are grateful for the collaboration between Saint Agnes and the Chester County Health Department, who have worked hard to have healthy and safe meals available to those in poverty.
