WSJ: The Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX Journey Can Be Traced Back to This NFL Draft Decision

After struggling on defense down the stretch of the 2023 season, the Eagles put an emphasis on defense during the NFL Draft, and this move has paid off.

When the Philadelphia Eagles selected cornerbacks in each of their first two picks in the 2024 NFL Draft, many criticized the decision.

However, those two players — Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean — played key roles on defense throughout the Eagles’ season, en route to a Super Bowl victory, write Andrew Beaton and Joshua Robinson for The Wall Street Journal.

“All of us rookies, they brought us in and taught us everything they know,” DeJean said. “Now, to be here on the biggest stage and be able to hold that Lombardi Trophy…it’s pretty crazy.”

DeJean notably made one of the best plays of Super Bowl LIX with a pick-six, intercepting a pass from Patrick Mahomes and returning it for a 38-yard touchdown.

Despite being rookies, Mitchell and DeJean were critical in helping the Eagles become one of the top teams and defenses in the entire NFL.

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has been the mastermind behind constructing two Super Bowl-winning teams. His approach has been identifying the team’s inefficiencies, trying to stay ahead of the competition, and being unafraid to take chances.

Drafting those two cornerbacks, coupled with several other offseason moves, has certainly paid off.
