Phoenixville’s plastic bag ban went into effect on Jan. 1, following numerous townships in the area in an effort to reduce environmental impact and promote sustainability, writes Justin Heinze for Patch.
This measure addresses significant environmental issues, including greenhouse gas emissions, litter, and threats to wildlife. Plastic production, predicted to surpass coal in carbon emissions by 2030, also contributes to microplastics accumulating in human bodies.
Passed on Jan. 9, 2024, the ordinance prohibits establishments from providing single-use plastic or non-recycled paper bags, instead focusing on using reusable and/or paper bags.
To ease the transition, enforcement will start in mid-July. This will allow businesses time to adapt and use up existing bag inventories.
Advocacy groups like PennEnvironment collaborate with local officials to draft effective legislation across municipalities.
Phoenixville’s actions contribute to a broader trend, with activists hoping more municipalities will follow.
