The REAL ID deadline is just around the corner for Pennsylvania, writes Tiana Eicher for the Pittsburgh Magazine.
Starting on May 7, if you do not have a REAL ID, you will need either a valid U.S. passport or military ID to fly within the country or enter a military base or federal building.
The original deadline was October 2020, but due to COVID-19 and other issues, it has been extended several times.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security made specially encrypted cards mandatory after terrorists used fake IDs in the 9/11 attacks.
Customers can bring all required documents to any PennDOT REAL ID center or PennDOT Driver License Center to receive their upgraded identification. Pre-verified customers can apply online to get their ID.
Required documents include an original or certified birth certificate or a valid U.S. passport, a Social Security Number proof, two proofs of a current address in Pennsylvania, such as a valid driver’s license, utility bill, or auto insurance card, and proof of legal name changes, if applicable.
