The Philadelphia area has long been a magnet for out-of-town restaurateurs, and it’s a trend that is expected to continue throughout 2025, writes Michael Klein for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Business partners, restaurateur Roni Mazumdar and chef Chintan Pandya, are planning to expand their New York-based restaurant company, Unapologetic Foods, and Philadelphia is where they are eyeing.
“I couldn’t have thought of a better food city than Philadelphia,” Mazumdar said, citing the city’s “really exciting dining scene, with people who are taking chances.”
While they have not yet determined a name or concept for its Philly restaurant, it is due to open in Fishtown this year.
Several more New York-based restaurants are coming to Philly.
For example, The Newsroom, an offshoot of a Queens nightspot, is planning to open soon in Northern Liberties.
Palestinian restaurant, Ayat, based in Brooklyn, is currently under construction at the former Roxy Theater in Rittenhouse Square.
Meanwhile, Manhattan-based restaurant Pig & Khao, is coming to Kensington.
There is also Wonder, the food delivery service, planning to set up dozens of locations in Philly and South Jersey.
Several Washington D.C. based contents are also on its way to Philly this year, such as steak frites restaurant Medium Rare, which will take space in Fishtown.
