Montgomery County residents are concerned about the mysterious drones flying overhead. Federal officials say there's no need to worry.

Mysterious drone sightings have Montgomery County residents concerned, but federal officials stress there’s no cause for alarm, write Pierre Thomas, Kevin Shalvey, Lauren Peller, Arthur Jones II, and Isabella Murray for ABC News.

Over the last few weeks, law enforcement has received over 5,000 tips regarding drone sightings in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and along the East Coast.

National security spokesperson John Kirby said, “We assessed that these drones, these aircraft people are seeing are a mix of law enforcement drones, commercial drones and hobbyists. We continue to see nothing that indicates a public safety risk or national security risk.”

Kirby reminds the public that over 1 million drones are registered in the FAA in the United States, and thousands operate lawfully daily. The Northeast corridor, where many drone sightings are occurring, is one of the busiest airspaces.

Another reason for the increased sightings is seasonal change. According to Kirby, there’s more night sky for people to look up and see things.

President Biden is urging Congress to address regulatory processes that prevent law enforcement from properly monitoring these drones, including clarifying the line between federal and local jurisdiction.
