Longwood Gardens Prepares to Unveil Crown Jewel Project
Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, recently crowned as the most beautiful garden in the world by Titan Travel, is preparing to unveil its stunning $250 million expansion, writes William O’Connor for Travel + Leisure.
The heart of the major renovation is a mesmerizing 32,000-square-foot conservatory that appears as if it is floating on water with a Mediterranean garden inside.
The new West Conservatory was designed by the New York architecture firm Weiss/Manfredi. The gorgeous structure is constructed of glass and metal and features a pleated roof that unfolds unevenly to echo the nearby rolling hills.
Inside, Mediterranean gardens designed by Reed Hilderbrand, featuring Mediterranean cypress, agave, bay laurels, and kumquat, appear to float in the pool. To be sure that the space could be enjoyed by intergenerational groups, the designers set the area with benches for people to rest and truly take in their surroundings.
Other–just as impressive–upgrades include a 12,000-square-foot bonsai courtyard, a new restaurant with a view of the fountains, a pavilion dedicated to Roberto Burle Marx’s cascade garden, and several new groves of trees.
Longwood Reimagined is expected to open to the public on Nov. 22.
