Popular, But Closed, Alabama Farm Market Torn Down for a Wawa
The Burris Farm Market, a green and white Alabama farmhouse popular with travelers leaving Interstate 10 for Alabama and Florida beaches, has been replaced with a Wawa, writes Lauren Walck for NOLA.com.
The market, identified by its giant inflatable fruit, had been there since 1986. It had fresh produce for sale, while a bakery and ice cream shop in the back offered cobbler a la mode and pie.
But the Loxley, Alabama farmer’s market closed in February 2024. Now the building is being torn down for a new Wawa gas station and convenience store, reports WPMI-TV.
The decision to close came from the Burris family, who stated simply in a Facebook post, “It has been a pleasure to service the local community for all these years. But it is time to move on.”
The store’s popularity was reflected in the 500 comments that accompanied the post, reflecting on purchases of strawberry pizza, homemade dressings and fresh produce on the way to Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, or to Florida.
The store assets were auctioned off in October, and most of the property sold.
The new Wawa will compete with a Buccee’s travel center just a few miles away that opened in 2019.
