King of Prussia recently celebrated the grand opening of its newest green space, First Avenue Linear Park, reports Justin Heinze for the Patch.
The park is an innovative urban development based on the “complete street” concept. This project, located in the Moore Park area and stretching from Allendale Road to N. Gulph Road, has been a work in progress for over a decade, with construction spanning 12 years.
The idea behind a “complete street” is to create a more inclusive and sustainable urban environment. It emphasizes walkability, accessibility, and safety for all users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. Pennsylvania State Senator Amanda Cappelletti, speaking at the opening ceremony, expressed her enthusiasm for the park and the concept. “We know that when we can live, work, and play in our communities, we are all happier and healthier. Thank you for having that vision for Upper Merion,” she said.
The park’s central path, ranging from 8 to 12 feet wide, connects 15 properties along First Avenue. It features various amenities designed to foster community engagement and sustainability. The park has a ping pong table, public seating, a beehive, rain gardens, solar-powered lighting, and bus shelters.
Additionally, new landscaping enhances the park’s appeal, making it a welcoming spot for both residents and visitors.
In addition to its design, the park is set to host a variety of community events, such as live music performances, bouquet-making classes, and beekeeping demonstrations. These events are expected to bring people together and create a vibrant, interactive space.
The project was made possible through a $4.9 million grant awarded to the King of Prussia District and Upper Merion Township. It marks a significant investment in the future of the community.
