The Beatles Played Their First Show in Philadelphia in Front of Ecstatic Crowd 60 Years Ago
September 2 marked 60 years since the Beatles played their first show in Philadelphia in front of 12,000 ecstatic fans, and the whole concert was out of control, writes Larry Kane for KYW Newsradio.
Almost every person in the audience at the Convention Hall at the Philadelphia Civic Center believed that one of the Fab Four was singing directly to them. Paul McCartney noted that many truly believed they were in love.
“I was supposed to recognize her immediately and fall in love with her, which didn’t happen,” he said. “Definitely didn’t happen.”
At one point, the folding seats started collapsing as fans rushed the stage. The Philadelphia Police Department had to be extremely careful while attempting to bring the situation under control.
Another ominous moment happened after the show, when famous American psychic and astrologer Jeane Dixon predicted that the band’s plane would crash on the flight from Philadelphia to Indianapolis later that night.
Of course, while the prediction did not come true, but for the plane passengers, it was a white-knuckle flight from start to finish.
