The Franklin Institute is celebrating its 200 year anniversary in 2024. To culminate this milestone, the Franklin Institute is bringing two exhibitions to the museum this fall.

This fall, the Franklin Institute will be opening two new permanent exhibits, featuring two of its most popular artifacts as part of a recent $20.5 million investment, writes Emma Dooling for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

On November 23, the cultural institution will open its $12 million Hamilton Collections Gallery, which houses its 350-ton Baldwin locomotive. The same day, the Franklin Institute will also debut the new $8.5 million Body Odyssey exhibit that focuses on health and the human body. The latter’s centerpiece is the institute’s Giant Heart.

The Hamilton Collections Gallery will showcase the Baldwin locomotive alongside thousands of artifacts in the museum’s collections. The new exhibit will also allow visitors to see artifacts that weren’t previously on display to the public.

In addition to the Giant Heart, which has been at the museum since 1954, Body Odyssey will also feature experiences around other biological systems, biotech innovation, and personal health. It will also include a new activation where visitors can experience their own heartbeat pulsing from the Giant Heart.

The two exhibit’s openings will be the culmination of the Franklin Institute’s 200-year anniversary this year.

“As we looked at our 200th anniversary, these were the important things to get open to really celebrate that,” Franklin Institute CEO Larry Dubinski said.
