Tredyffrin-Easttown Students Look to Break a Guinness World Record This Sunday
The Tredyffrin-Easttown Egg Drop Team will try to break a Guinness World Record this weekend, writes Max Bennett for Patch.
The team consists of Matthew Ma, Charlie Gawthrop, Jeffrey Wang, Breckin Shefflerwood, and teacher Dr. Derrick Wood. The students, from both Conestoga High School and Valley Forge Middle School, will aim to break the record for “Greatest Height to Drop a Protected Egg Without Breaking” this Sunday at the American Helicopter Museum and Education Center in West Chester.
The reigning record is 54.13 feet, and it was set by the T/E Egg Drop Team in June of 2022. Their goal is to drop from 80 to 90 feet.
“What started as a crazy concept in our Science Olympiad class has now grown into something real, something with a dedicated team behind it. To us, holding the Guinness World Record would be a testament to how far we’ve come,” Ma said.
The team created their own egg-protecting device, which has been tested at multiple heights to ensure effectiveness. The device’s design must adhere to Guinness’ strict guidelines.
The egg is directly surrounded by foam and cardboard. Straws stick out, acting as a source to absorb the energy from the fall. Most important is the parachute, which the team created with a plastic bag and elastic string.
