Wegmans and Wawa recorded the greatest increases in sales last year among grocery retailers in the Philadelphia area, writes Ryan Mulligan for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

According to Food World’s annual market study, Wawa ranked third in market share (10.98 percent) and Wegmans placed eighth (3.92 percent)in the $21.5 billion Philadelphia-area market, which includes Chester County. When the field is narrowed down just to supermarkets, Wegmans ranked even higher in the region for market share in fourth place.

Giant came out on top, with 15.94 percent of the market, closely followed by ShopRite with a 14.29 percent market share.

Acme came in fourth with a 9.25 percent market share, CVS is in fifth place with 6.29 percent, Walmart is in sixth with 6.65 percent, and Target is seventh with a 4.17 percent market share.

BJ’s Wholesale Club and Aldi round out the top ten with 2.74 percent and 2.49 percent market share respectively.

Compared to last year, the top seven retailers in terms of market share stayed the same. This shows that despite the current inflation rate, customers largely continued to shop at the same grocery retailers as before.
