Conshohocken Woman Who Started As a SEPTA Traffic Checker Now Runs Its Merchandise Store
Al’Lee Floyd, who grew up in Conshohocken, joined SEPTA part-time in 2017 as a traffic checker, writes Stephanie Farr for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
In the next few years, she moved up to the positions of testing coordinator and customer experience manager. When SEPTA decided it was time to open its reimagined store in 2021, Floyd was selected to be its leader.
“I definitely have that creativity in the brain,” she said.
Today, Floyd is the manager of the SEPTA Store and manager of experiential design. She keeps the shelves of the store — as well as its online site — filled with nostalgic, witty, and responsive products.
One of her most popular designs is a T-shirt that features an illustration of SEPTA’s Silverliner IV with the words “I’m not old I’m classic.” The shirt was released at the end of May and is nearly sold out.
Floyd gets ideas from her staff, local artists, and SEPTA customers.
Thanks to her efforts, the SEPTA store recorded its most profitable year so far in 2023, with over $412,000 in sales.
“Al’Lee has such a good eye for what people are going to like and what works,” said Lex Powers, SEPTA’s director of service information design. “I think that she’s really got her finger on the pulse in that way.”
