Wynnewood-based Alex’s Lemonade Stand is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Lemonade Days, the family-friendly fundraiser for pediatric cancer research, writes Melissa Jacobs for Main Line Tonight.

Lemonade Days, which have raised over $20.5 million in the last two decades, are one of Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation’s signature programs.

The foundation is the nation’s largest independent childhood cancer charity raising over $300 million over the years to fund over 1,500 research projects throughout North America and Europe.

Still, this anniversary is bittersweet as it marks the death of the foundation’s namesake, Alex Scott. Alexandra created a lemonade stand in her yard when she was four years old to raise money to give to her doctors so they could help other children fighting cancer.

Alex was diagnosed with neuroblastoma before she turned one.

“Fighting cancer made her wiser and more aware of many things,” said her mother, Liz Scott.

By the time she died at eight years old, Alex had raised $1 million for pediatric cancer research and started a national movement.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation is run by Liz and her husband Jay Scott. They marked another milestone recently: every state now has Alex’s Lemonade Stands.
