A Vintage Dress Worn by Quakertown’s Sabrina Carpenter on Her Birthday Causes Scrutiny of Depop Seller, Reselling Practices
Quakertown native Sabrina Carpenter celebrated her birthday in a yellow dress that ended up sparking a conversation on the ethics and prices of reselling, writes Emily Bloch for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Carpenter’s stylist got the dress off Depop, a popular secondhand clothing app. The singer posted photos from her New York party over the weekend where she posed in a yellow satin slip.
The seller of the dress, Jules Berg, said the dress was a vintage piece from Caché.
Selling to a celebrity brought Berg popularity but also scrutiny and the ire of some users who found her pricing – and naming – unethical.
After going through her page, they found she listed 15-year-old shorts from Forever 21 and Abercrombie for hundreds of dollars.
But Berg said that is business as usual.
She thrifted the dress Carpenter wore for about $50 in New York, cropped it into a mini, and sold it to the singer’s team for $256. She describes the sale as a milestone.
“Never in my wildest dreams did I think that the dress I thrifted a few years ago would end up in Sabrina Carpenter’s closet,” she said.
