Philadelphia As a Travel Destination Offers Nourishment For Both the Body and Soul
Philadelphia is stepping out of New York City’s shadow as a wonderful travel destination where visitors can find nourishment for both body and soul, writes Orla Thomas for National Geographic.
Philadelphia is taking center stage in the nation’s dining scene. Last year, the city got more James Beard Foundation Awards than any other in the country.
Among the must visit places is Paesano’s, one of the best sandwich shops in a city that really loves a sandwich. One of its highlights is the ‘arista,’ stuffed with roast suckling pig, broccoli rabe, ‘long hot’ peppers and provolone cheese.
Meanwhile, at Casa Mexico, the food is delicious and family inspired.
“When we gather to eat, our energies are united,” said owner Cristina Martinez.
The next stop should be the outdoor Italian Market, established by immigrants from Abruzzo and Sicily. Most of the businesses are owned by third- or fourth-generation Italians. The market is surrounded by Jewish shops and Asian supermarkets, which reflects the legacy of subsequent waves of immigration.
For shopping, visitors should head to South Street, a district that spans around 14 blocks and is home to many local artists and an eclectic collection of shops.
