Abstract Flash: Unseen Andrew Wyeth, a new exhibition at the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine, showcases the Chadds Ford artist’s never before displayed abstract watercolors, writes Chadd Scott for Forbes

The exhibition is on view through Sept. 8, 2024.

The presentation is drawn from the Andrew and Betsy Wyeth Collection which contains almost 7,000 objects, which is managed by the Brandywine Museum of Art in Chadds Ford.

The exhibit debuted at Brandywine. Each presentation centers on Wyeth’s abstract watercolors that were created either in Chadds Ford, his hometown, or mid-coast Maine, where he lived during summers.

“The abstract watercolors that are the focus of Abstract Flash: Unseen Andrew Wyeth have come as a revelation to me and to many,” said William L. Coleman, Wyeth Foundation Curator and Director of the Andrew & Betsy Wyeth Study Center at the Brandywine Museum of Art.

Hundreds of abstract watercolors produced throughout Wyeth’s career from the 1930s to post-2000 were part of a trove of new material left to Brandywine Museum of Art to manage by his wife Betsy Wyeth after she died in 2020.

All of them were previously unseen by the public.
