Phoenixville Area High School is looking for ways to keep the JROTC program running after it was informed by the Air Force that it would be discontinued at the end of the school year, writes Maddie Hanna for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The school was informed that the reason for the discontinuation of the program was enrollment. Currently, 65 students participate in the JROTC program. However, federal law requires the participation of ten percent of the school’s population in the program, or 100 students, whichever is less.

Leaders at the school which has 1,200 students believe the bar is unreasonably high.

So the school board sent a letter to Pennsylvania members of the U.S. Senate and Congress asking them to review the laws that govern the program.

The school district already has the backing of U.S. Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, an Air Force veteran and Chester County representative who is herself a ROTC graduate. She and several other members of Congress also recently sent a letter to the Air Force asking it to reconsider the closure of several programs, including the Phoenixville unit.
