Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott recently made major contributions to 361 nonprofits nationwide.
Of the more than 300 nonprofits, 11 are based in Pennsylvania, including five that have operations in Philadelphia, writes Daniel Urie for Penn Live.
One is Bread & Roses Community Fund, a funder of grassroots organizing for racial, social, and economic justice in the Philadelphia region.
Another is 12 Plus. With operations in Philadelphia and Camden, 12 Plus’ mission is to increase educational equity by building school cultures that inspire academic achievement and empower students to succeed in educational opportunities beyond 12th grade.
The Philip Jaisohn Memorial Foundation, which operates in Philadelphia, Montgomery County, and Delaware County, provides a broad range of medical and health care, mental health care, and social services along with advocacy and leadership development for the enrichment of the community.
Beyond Literacy in Philadelphia provides free education and career readiness.
Lastly, there is the Education Law Center-PA, whose mission is to ensure access to quality public education for all children in Pennsylvania.
Scott’s Yield Giving organization prioritized “community-led, community-focused organizations whose explicit purpose is to advance the voices and opportunities of individuals and families of meager or modest means, and groups who have met with discrimination and other systemic obstacles.”
