Pocopson native Jillian Simmons is the Agency with Choice Program Manager at The Arc of Chester County, where she supervises four Program Coordinators who manage and oversee the services for approximately 250-300 individuals with disabilities within the Agency with Choice Program.

“I love so many aspects of my work, but what I enjoy the most is training and assisting my team to expand and build upon their knowledge, as well as being able to ensure that individuals with disabilities and their families within our program are served at the highest level,” said Simmons. “The mission, vision, and values of The Arc of Chester County, as well as the goals and principles of the Agency with Choice Program, are something I hold very close to my heart. I receive enormous gratification knowing that we are empowering individuals with disabilities.”

Simmons first started working as a junior in high school at the Kendal Crossland Communities in food service and maintained this job through college until she graduated and obtained full-time work. She attended Unionville High School, where she graduated in 2007. From there, she went directly to Penn State University and graduated with a B.S. in human development and family studies in 2012.

Simmons attributes her career growth to her initial Director at the Agency with Choice Program, emphasizing the profound impact they had.

“This person spent a lot of time with me, ensuring that I had all of the practical and technical knowledge to succeed in my career,” said Simmons. “They were also able to open up to be personal about what it truly means to have a loved one with a disability. I was able to use this practical and personal knowledge to expand my own skill set and eventually be promoted to Manager.”

With support from her first director and her own determination, Simmons reflects on her proudest achievement: her substantial personal and professional development within the human services sector.

“I began as an intern with The Arc of Chester County, working in our Children’s Early Learning Services Program, and then was honored to be offered a full-time position. It was during these first experiences that I developed my passion for helping and supporting individuals with disabilities.”

One of Simmons’ favorite Chester County restaurants is Sedona Taphouse, as it has the best gluten-free options and truffle fries.

Simmons and the rest of the 2024 Class of VISTA Millennial Superstars will be honored at the Awards Reception & Celebration on Thursday, May 9 at Penn State Great Valley.
