NYT: James McBride’s Latest Novel About Pottstown Hits Million-Copy Sales Milestone
The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store, James McBride’s latest novel which follows the Black and Jewish residents of Pottstown in the early 20th century, recently reached an impressive milestone, writes Elizabeth A. Harris for The New York Times.
Since its summer release, the book has sold over a million copies.
McBride has written eight novels, some of which have also found major success. However, seeing sales as fast and robust as the ones his latest book has recorded is vanishingly rare in today’s world of literary fiction.
But while he is more than grateful for the success, McBride, who grew up poor alongside 11 siblings, is not entirely comfortable with it.
“You’ve been David all your life, and you become Goliath,” he said. “Your life changes when you become Goliath.”
His new book found success thanks to, in large part, bookstores. It was chosen by both Barnes & Noble and Amazon as the best book of 2023. It was also supported by independent stores.
There is also the strength of the novel itself. The story of justice, love, and community resonated with many readers.
