Birchrunville Vietnam War Veteran Presented with Silver Star Medal for Unforgettable Bravery
Lawrence “Larry” Liss, of Birchrunville, was recently awarded the Silver Star from Four Star General, Daniel R. Hokanson, at Valley Forge Military Academy and College, writes Bill Rettew for The Daily Local News.
The Silver Star medal is a symbol of achievement for gallantry in action and a testament to extraordinary heroism. It is the third highest military combat decoration that can be awarded to a United States Armed Forces member.
Both State Representative Chrissy Houlahan and U.S. State Senator Bob Casey worked hard to secure and support the honoring of Liss.
“Captain Larry M. Liss is a patriot whose bravery helped save the lives of more than 80 troops during the Vietnam War,” said Senator Casey. “I am proud to have worked with the Liss family and Representative Houlahan to ensure Captain Liss receives this high honor for his valor. Pennsylvania and our Nation owe him a debt of gratitude.”
On May 4, 1967, in Vietnam, Northern Vietnamese soldiers were set to overrun a U.S. operations outpost. Liss, in a Huey helicopter, made his way through dense thicket to save more than 80 soldiers. While getting out of the injured helicopter, he returned rifle fire while pulling U.S. soldiers to safety.
“I don’t think anybody realizes what it means to be a helicopter pilot in combat,” Liss said. “You can’t hide in a helicopter. You’re exposed and they hear you coming. You’re out there all alone.”
