Philadelphia has always been home to many spots that serve great hoagies, but there are some that truly stand out from the crowd, write Jillian Wilson, Craig LaBan, and Michael Klein for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Angelo’s Pizzeria in South Philadelphia raises the hoagie standard by baking its own rolls. As a result, the popular pizzeria makes delicious sandwiches that are just as much a draw as its pies. Highlights include prosciutto-forward options, an olive oil-drizzled tuna hoagie, and its three-cheese sandwich.

Antonio’s Deli uses Sarcone’s Bakery bread for its sandwiches, including the local favorite, the eggplant-rich veggie hoagie.

Castellino’s Italian Market offers hoagies that are essentially still old-soul sandwiches with an updated twist. The Adronos embodies spice in a perfect mix of hot capicola and sopressata, peppercorn asiago, and cherry peppers.

“We literally slice every item on a hoagie to order, so it also takes time — at least five minutes — to make one,” said owner Cara Jo Castellino.

Cosmi’s Deli is a favorite of Philly’s Questlove, whose guilty pleasure is a roasted turkey hoagie from the South Philly shop.

Meanwhile, Dattilo’s Deli in Northeast Philadelphia makes mouthwatering hoagies with in-house mozzarella and fresh-made sausages that are rated among some of the city’s best.
