Job interviews are an important part of the hiring process, and how you present yourself can make or break the potential employer’s impression of you.

The stakes are higher for a six-figure job. Here are phrases you should avoid according to career coach Natalie Fisher.  

“I’m an excellent communicator”  

While employers value communication, you need evidence to back up these proclamations. Instead, use an example of a time that you’ve effectively and efficiently communicated with your peers.  

“I have strong organization skills” 

Fisher instead suggests including a time that a manager has pointed out this skill. Having a hard copy of a performance review is a surefire way to gain the trust of your interviewer.  

“I’m good in a crisis”  

Instead of over-generalizing your ability to navigate rough waters, provide an example of when you were able to handle a stressful situation.  

“People feel comfortable around me” 

Demonstrate how your social skills were able to help your team, instead of making blanket statements.  

“I have great networking skills” 

This cliché statement isn’t going to impress your interviewers. Instead talk more about the strong relationships in your personal life, because it’s more of an accurate demonstration of your character.
