During her inauguration ceremony, Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker outlined the important role the business community will play in her administration’s efforts to improve the city, writes Ryan Mulligan for the Philadelphia Business Journal. 

Parker spelled out the need for business leaders to have a seat at the table.

Her plans include creating an initiative to remove the red tape around starting a business and launching a roundtable with business leaders.

“We want all people on a path to self sufficiency here in the city of Philadelphia, but they can’t do that without access to an economic opportunity, a career, learning new skills so that they can earn a living wage, have health care, earn retirement security and take care of their families,” Parker said.

She highlighted the fact that it can’t happen without the business community. 

Parker, along with City Council President Kenyatta Johnson, outlined a plan to rid the city of needless processes around starting a business. She will also announce the PHL Open for Business initiative, which will require each city department to submit a list of potentially unnecessary permits or regulations. 

“On day one, we want the business community to know that Philadelphia is officially open for business,” Parker said.
