Two months after founders Andy and Jen Satinsky announced that Weckerly’s Ice Cream would be closing, it will instead reopen in January under new ownership, writes Hira Qureshi for The Philadelphia Inquirer. 

The Satinskys have sold the Weckerly’s Ice Cream to Cristina Torres.

Her love for the popular Fishtown ice cream shop began in 2021 when she went there and tried the chocolate vanilla ice cream sandwich. 

She later tried the black raspberry jam ice cream sandwich, and that led to an even deeper affinity and eventual ownership.

“Honestly, I think when I tried that one, it was like I have to — I’m definitely doing this,” said Torres. “These flavors that they’ve brought to life in sandwich form, you can’t get anywhere else.”

Many reached out after the Satinskys announced their decision to close, but Torres stood out from the others due to her aligned vision to follow through with running the business. 

“I have a great passion for good food, for service, and I love Philadelphia,” Torres said. [Weckerly’s] is a really special place and, honestly, it’s an honor and privilege [to take over].”

The Satinskys will be involved for two months to help with the transition. 

Weckerly’s will officially reopen on Jan. 6, 2024.
