Eighty-seven-year-old Robert Burns, a West Grove resident, is finally preparing to retire on Dec. 31 after spending 75 years working, writes Bill Rettew for The Daily Local News.

He is currently employed as a salesman for John Thomas Inc., a seller of portable traffic signals.

Burns’ first job was delivering prescriptions on foot for his uncle’s Philadelphia drug store. He was 12 years old at the time. He also scrubbed floors at the store and was paid a dollar a week as his salary. And thanks to saving his tips, he was able to eventually buy a bicycle.

Over the years, he delivered the Evening Bulletin and worked several salesman gigs.

The highlight of his career happened when he won a mink coat in a contest after just a week on his job as a salesman.

“They told me it could not be done by a newcomer,” said Burns.

While he could have retired sooner, he decided to continue working much longer than necessary. The advice he has as somebody who worked approximately 142,000 hours to the rest of us who work for around 90,000 hours over a lifetime?

“Enjoy what you are doing,” he said.
