New York Times: Philly Native, Actor Colman Domingo is Riding High Nearly a Decade After Almost Calling it Quits
In 2014, Colman Domingo experienced a breakthrough year of great highs, but also lows so low that he nearly called it quits. But this year is validation for him not making that drastic decision, writes Kyle Buchanan for The New York Times.
Domingo, a Philadelphia native, is starring in both the Netflix drama Rustin and the new version of The Color Purple.
The former earned him a Golden Globes nomination for Best Actor in a Drama and could lead to more nominations.
“I don’t want to miss this moment,” Domingo said about his current successes. “All the films, all the lights, all the accolades, all the beautiful critical responses — I want to bathe in all of that right now.”
None of today’s successes would be possible had he gone through with his contemplation of leaving Hollywood in 2014.
That year, he had just come off a successful role in the stage musical, “The Scottsboro Boys” in London.
Upon returning to New York, however, he would only receive auditions for relatively minimal roles. The one role he felt would be another breakthrough was pulled from under him for him not being “light-skinned enough.”
Domingo used it as a learning experience and now is becoming a household name.
