The new development where Germantown High School was located will feature a mix of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments.

Just over a decade ago, Germantown High School was shut down due to its academic performance, shrinking enrollment, and a financial crisis.

However, next year, the space will be converted into a new mixed-use development with about 240 apartments, writes Aaron Moselle for WHYY.

The first 45 units are expected to be completed in the next 6-8 months, while the finished product could wrap up in 2025.

Nearly two years ago, Germantown Development began its transformation of the property on Germantown Avenue.

The company plans to transform the interior over four phases and offer studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments. The second phase will see 57 units come online, while the third phase will have 99 units, and the final phase will see approximately 40.

“We want to bring a nice beautiful project for the community that can benefit everyone — the people living next door, the people living nearby. We’re just trying to satisfy everyone,” said operations Nir Alon.

The project will also have about 3,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial space.

Germantown High was the neighborhood’s only public high school and had been a 99-year staple in the community before it was shut down.
