Like a Phoenix, Oxford’s Community Rises from the Ashes After Devastating Fire in September
After a devastating fire in Oxford in September, the community is rallying to rebuild the heart of its historic downtown area, writes Marcella Baietto for CBS News Philadelphia.
Among the shops destroyed was The Maroon Hornet Comics & Collectibles, owned by Laura and Randy Grace.
“We finally got the shop where we wanted it right before it happened,” said Randy Grace. “So it’s hard, it’s hard to see it but we’ll get there again.”
With the help of the community, it took under two months for the pair to find a new home for their shop just down the street. While most of their inventory was lost in the fire, firefighters managed to recover the shop’s life-sized icon from the rubble.
“I turned the corner and there was Spider-Man,” said Laura Grace. “They carried Spider-Man out for us.”
In addition to local businesses being impacted, 24 families lost their homes to the fire. According to the Neighborhood Services Center, just one of them still needs a home.
“It’s a recovery period but it made me feel how wonderful it is to be in Oxford,” said Leandria Hall, Neighborhood Services Center program director.
