Church Farm School recently dedicated its new all-weather track as part of its Family Visiting Day celebrations.

Special recognition was given N. Peter Hamilton, who graciously helped fund the cost of the new scoreboard that accompanies the six-lane track, as well as Dr. John Grunwell, a member of CFS’s Class of 1960.

Board Vice Chair Vince Napoleon, senior leader and track star Dylan Lumumba, and Franky Mills — a member of CFS’s Class of 2012 who competed in track at the collegiate level — each gave remarks about the significance of the new track and what it will help new athletes accomplish. The ceremony ended with a “first race” on the track completed by three cross-country runners: seniors Angel Asiamah, Jonathan Rivas, and Eshtiyak Shahed.

The project to update CFS’s cinder track commenced in August 2022. The school’s track team typically has 70 students participating annually. Since joining the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) in the 2008-2009 school year, the track team has had 41 district champions and 23 state medalists, with 11 runners continuing to their track careers at the collegiate level.

“The track will be a huge boost to our athletes’ training, performance, and health,” said Assistant Athletic Director and Track Coach Tom Johnstone. “Being able to run on the new surface compared to the old cinder track will reduce injuries and allow our guys to practice on a surface that prepares them for the tracks they will see in competition around the state.”
