Highland Orchards is one of the best orchards in Chester County for apple-picking.

The fall season is upon us, making it the best time to visit one of the local orchards for a variety of delicious apples that you can pick yourself, writes Ed Williams for Main Line Today

For Barnard’s Orchard in Kennett Square, it has been a great year. The weather has produced a flavorful selection of apples – over 30 varieties. This small family-run orchard offers 74 acres of fruit along with a petite onsite store for seasonal treats and décor.

Glen Willow Orchard in Avondale has been operated by the Rosazza family since 1955. Other than its rich apple orchards, Glen Willow grows plenty of vegetables and has a farm stand that includes mushrooms. The orchard’s colorful field-grown mums are also a special treat for fall.

Meanwhile, Highland Orchards in West Chester offers daily picking of many varieties, including Staymen, Ida Red, Winesap, and Rome. The family-owned farm also has a seven-pound to-go bag if you are in a rush. During Fall Harvest weekends, you can grab freshly baked pies and seasonal pastries, as well as legendary hot apple cider donuts.
