Berwyn Home Built Nearly Century Ago for Hires Root Beer Family Hits Market
A Berwyn home built nearly a century ago in the English Cotswold manor style for a member of the Hires Root Beer family has hit the market for $1.425 million, writes Lisa Dukart for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The 5,621-square-foot residence was constructed for Harrison S. Hires, one of the sons of Charles Elmer Hires, a pharmacist best known for popularizing root beer.
The home’s original owner was an author and poet. The house still features many original details from the time when he commissioned it.
“It’s almost like walking through time,” said Laura Caterson of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Fox and Roach.
The home is perfectly situated on 1.2 beautiful acres and boasts a gorgeous stone exterior that was most likely selected by Hires’ wife, Christine Leland Hires.
“The stonework is exquisite,” said Caterson. “She picked where she wanted them to go and they fit together like a puzzle. It’s beautiful.”
Inside, the home boasts spacious living areas, including a family room with cathedral wood ceilings, a solarium with access to a stone patio, and a unique sleeping porch.
