2023 SCORE Awards Celebrate ‘Collaborating for Success’
It’s that time of year when SCORE Chester and Delaware Counties takes great pride in celebrating the milestone accomplishments of entrepreneurs with the support of their mentors.
Five small businesses were honored at the June 1st annual Small Business Achievements Awards luncheon at Penn Oaks Golf Club in West Chester. Client success and client recognition are very important to SCORE.
Mercedes Diaz, SCORE Mentor, and Awards Team program leader described how important and effective it is “…for business owners to work together with their mentors, learn from professionals across the local business community, and access subject matter experts in the SCORE national network. It is rare that a small business can be successful without leveraging critical collaborations with others who have real-world experience that can help them!”
SCORE is the nation’s largest network of volunteer business experts dedicated to helping small businesses get off the ground, grow and achieve their goals.
SCORE Chester and Delaware Counties has been operating since 1985, with 100 volunteers today who provide confidential mentoring at no charge and business training to benefit the local community.
Recognizing that no one person – or one entrepreneur – can be an expert in all areas, the One SCORE team mentoring approach enables a connection across 10,000+ volunteer business experts in the US to help clients make progress on their business plans.
This can be delivered in a variety of ways, for example, by co-mentoring with the local teams, sharing educational webinars on key business skills, and providing relevant tools, templates, articles, blogs, and additional valuable resources.
Over time, SCORE is assisting more and more clients across county and state lines who are developing and growing regional, national, and international businesses and nonprofit organizations.
The virtual meeting technology has enabled an efficient sharing model to optimize the support for SCORE clients everywhere.
The five Award winners and their SCORE mentors shared their stories explaining how they worked together to successfully gain government contractor status, empower spa clients to manage stress, shift business strategy to grow and expand, enable youth to access hands-on tech training, and improve digital marketing efforts to help families cope with addiction.
This year’s award-winning founders and owners represent diverse backgrounds and segments, including minority and woman-ownership, financial industry professionals, equal employment opportunity project managers, ‘film guy’ experts with solid experience from QVC, and healthcare experts.

- their mission and unique value proposition
- their path to success
- how SCORE helped them
- how the business is doing today

David Houseman, Chapter chairman, welcomed the guests and introduced sponsor Phil Sutliff of Citadel Credit Union, who extended his personal congratulations to the award winners.
A brief panel discussion among four SCORE Mentors regarding ‘Collaborating for Success’ was facilitated by Lynne Williams, entrepreneur and executive director of Great Careers Groups.
Williams has also been a SCORE Volunteer since 2013, a Workshop Presenter, and a previous SCORE Small Business Achievement Award Winner.
Citations were presented to the award-winning business owners by Senator John Kane along with US and State political leaders from the surrounding communities. The SCORE team thanked the Chester County Commissioners and Delaware County Council members for their generous and continuous support.
Special recognition was given to the Citadel Credit Union studio for video production, to Jake Ferry of Active Image Media for video editing and event recording, and to Ashley Price-Horton, SCORE volunteer and photographer.
